Christchurch has a long-standing physical history of traditional gothic architecture brought by European settlers in the 1850’s.
16 of the 20 libraries in Christchurch are closed.
The current Historic Arts Center, consisting of numerous stone gothic buildings, originally housed the University of Canterbury until 1974. This area, recently one of the cities most significant cultural attractions, has been severely broken. Every single historic building in this section of the city has suffered some damage.
